Boxing Chatter: Roach Speaks On Pac Man

By David A. Avila

LOS ANGELES-At least once a week I try to drive into the Los Angeles area to see what’s going in the various gyms.

On Thursday there was a press conference for a heavyweight tournament near Hollywood at noon, so I drove early to the Wild Card Boxing gym to chat with master trainer Freddie Roach.

All the big hoopla the past two weeks has focused on newly crowned lightweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao possibly fighting junior middleweight Oscar De La Hoya in the East L.A. fighter’s goodbye bout. But earlier this week it was revealed that the Filipino superstar did not accept the final offer.

Goodbye super bout.

Now Pacquiao’s fans all think it’s a great fight that should be made. But those same fans think Pac Man could beat Mike Tyson in his prime.

I’m not one of them.

Pacquiao undoubtedly is the best fighter pound for pound and most exciting when you come right down to it, but fighting a man who has fought at middleweight just didn’t make sense for De La Hoya, no matter how you argued it.

So De La Hoya beats Pacquiao, so what? He’s the bigger guy.

When a fighter like De La Hoya - who has met most of the best fighters in his generation – is trying to say goodbye to the sport, it makes better sense to meet a boxer with a good chance of beating him.

Pacquiao is too small.

Remember a guy named Henry Armstrong?

Armstrong was one of the greatest fighters of all time. Maybe even greater than Sugar Ray Robinson. At one time he held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles at the same time!  Plus, he had more than 100 knockouts in his career.

And what happened to Armstrong?

Well, he moved up and challenged the middleweight champion named Ceferino Garcia, a Filipino by the way, and fought to a draw. But after that fight, Armstrong was never the same. Perhaps after enduring punches from a much bigger and stronger man. That can take a toll too. Armstrong lost three of five fights later that year. I think that could happen to Pacquiao too. And why chance it?

Now Freddie Roach, who I consider among the three best trainers today, and already a hall of fame inductee, told me he firmly believes his charge can beat De La Hoya.

Aside from being a great trainer, what most people fail to recognize, is that Roach is one of the smartest in the sport and a great businessman as well. He’s a Pisces too, for those who believe in astrological signs. That means he’s very intuitive.

I’m a Pisces too and my intuition tells me it’s not a favorable match up for Pac Man.

Freddie and I stood around the counter debating back and forth with a few others chiming in their opinions too. It was great stuff.

“Manny would knock out Oscar,” says Roach. “He’s just too fast for Oscar. He’d be moving in and out, back and forth.”

This is very true. Pacquiao has very quick feet and very quick hands and brings serious power for his size.

I acknowledged that. But said I: “Oscar has a very quick jab and every time Manny gets close all Oscar has to do is stick that jab out. It doesn’t matter how quick a guy is, he won’t be quicker than that jab.”

Roach countered with the Forbes fight.

“Look how beat up Oscar got against Forbes,” he said.

This was true.

“But that happened in the first five rounds. In the second half Oscar was battering Forbes with that jab. He nearly dropped him a few times toward the end with a jab,” said I.

That seemed to sink in a bit.

Roach said that De La Hoya can’t stay with Pacquiao, stamina wise. That’s a great point. He feels De La Hoya has a mental block with his own stamina.

“I’ve never seen a fighter as tense as Oscar before a fight,” said Roach, who trained De La Hoya for his fight with Floyd Mayweather last year that he lost by split-decision. “And you can forget about Oscar’s right hand. He might as well put that in his pocket.”

I couldn’t argue that Oscar’s right hand is potent, at least not against welterweights and middleweights, but Pacquiao is at most a lightweight.

“Pacquiao could run into a right hand and Oscar is still a bigger guy,” I said.

Roach shook his head.

“You can forget about Oscar’s right hand,” said Roach who knows first-hand working the mitts with De La Hoya last year.

Roach believes that either Ricky Hatton or Sergio Mora could be De La Hoya’s next opponent pending their next fights. He also heard that Sugar Shane Mosley’s name has been mentioned too.

I don’t think Mosley is a good idea. If De La Hoya beats Mosley people will say he didn’t want to beat the boss. They’re business partners. It doesn’t look ethical.

Now what about Pacquiao?

Humberto Soto is next for Pacquiao in November.

Roach doesn’t think it’s worth the risk. He likes waiting to see what happens when Joan Guzman meets Nate Campbell or Juan Manuel Marquez meets Joel Casamayor. The winners of those bouts would make for exciting viewing.

I definitely agree with that.

Back to the De La Hoya fight.

Roach firmly believes that Pacquiao can knock out De La Hoya. Now, I’m thinking, Freddie knows that Oscar can take a punch to the chin. He’s been tagged by Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad, Ike Quartey and Fernando Vargas on that square-like chin of his. But he’s never been knocked out with a shot upstairs.

Hmmm.

Roach won’t come out and say it, but he would probably have Pac Man set De La Hoya up for a body attack. That’s the East L.A fighter’s Achilles Heel as Hopkins proved.

That Freddie, he’s a wily trainer.

Police Nab Rhoshii Well’s Suspected Assassin

Arizona state troopers arrested a man named Roger Randolph, 26, a Las Vegas resident suspected of shooting welterweight contender and former U.S. Olympian Rhoshii Wells, 31, several days ago.

Witnesses told Las Vegas Police that Randolph had argued with Wells early Monday morning and had threatened to return. Later on Monday night, Wells was shot twice in the torso.

“It’s a great, great loss,” said Leroy Brooks, a former teammate of Wells during their amateur and pro career. “Rhoshii was the kind of guy who was hard to make mad. It took a lot to get him mad.”

Brooks said Wells' father Frederick Wells called him earlier in the month to say his son was back in the gym.

“I’m not just saying this, but Roshii Wells was a really good guy,” said Brooks. “If you needed something he would give whenever he could.”

Arizona state troopers arrested Randolph who was apparently driving toward Phoenix, Arizona.

Heavyweight tournament

Damian “Bolo” Wills (23-2-1, 17 KOs) has been added to the $1.5 million eight-man heavyweight tournament that takes place on Saturday Aug. 29 in Des Moines, Iowa said organizers on Thursday in a press conference in Los Angeles.

The entire tournament is a round-robin variety that takes place in one day. The eventual finalists will have fought 15 rounds or less against three opponents.

“I’m glad they considered me for this tournament,” said Wills who knocked out Greg McGhee a week ago in Mississippi. “I’m in the company of a lot of good guys.”

The tournament also added Oleg Platov (26-1, 22 KOs) from Ukraine who has a victory over Henry Akinwande and fought to a no-decision with Britain’s Danny Williams last December.

“I’m getting adapted to this country,” said Platov, who attended the press conference at Pound for Pound Gym.

Others in the tournament are Javier “Sexican-Mexican” Mora (21-4-1, 17 KOs), Fres Oquendo (29-4, 18 KOs), Duncan Dokiwari (25-3, 23 KOs), Chris Koval (24-4, 18 KOs), Devin Vargas (16-0, 7 KOs), and Cisse Salif (23-10-2, 21 KOs).

The fights can be seen on www.xbclive.com  for $19.95

The Real Deal:  Freddie Roach is full of crap! He wants the fight more then Manny wants it. He knows Manny cannot beat him. This would hurt boxing very much. I'm so glad this fight won't take place. I will know that it won't really happen when I hear the time and date for the Pacquiao vs Soto fight and the contracts are signed. Until then I will still think Oscar would do something because he knows Pacquiao is the only guy that he can beat. Roach didn't have a helluva game plan for Kirilov when he got smashed by Darchinyan. That's just talk from Roach. Freddie don't want to see Manny fight Soto because he knows it's a very dangerous fight and Soto is a big lightweight. He walks around at 160 pounds easily and he's about 5'8. I would pick Soto to win that fight. Damn that's a weak as heavyweight tournament! I love boxing but that's a bunch of bums

BigDaddy:  Pac-Man vs. DLH is just meaningless money grab by BOTH guys.Who really cares besides Manny's and Oscar's accountants? If Oscar wins, he beat a much smaller (Nothing to be proud of). If Manny wins, he beat an "Past his Prime" Oscar (WHOOP-DEE-DAMN-DOO!!!). I'm sick of all these bogus Exhibition Fights (DLH vs.PBF, RJJ vs. Trinidad, Nard vs. Anyone). I want REAL fights (Margarito-Cotto,JMM-PacMan,Vazquez-Rafa Marquez). Manny needs to cleanout the LW division and Oscar should just retire.
Thursday Aug 14, 2008
Golden boy turned greedy boy:  I'm glad Manny Pacquiao was a big gambler and a wise, smart gambler at that. I smart gambler knows when to bet and when not to bet. He has an instinct not governed by pride but by skills to out-think the opponent. Too bad for Oscar, Pacman is not someone who he can easily bluff with $$$$. Pacman is a fair fighter that gives his all. He is not even asking for a 50-50 share against an old man who has never won a big fight in his lifetime. 70-30 is robbery. 60-40 is fair. I do think so! Its still in golden Boy's favor but that is a fair deal. PACMAN, that is why you are my idol. You are one of a kind. I salute and support your decision to turn down GBP's bait. Oscar dela Hoya is a spoiled brat who got used to short-changing his opponents in PPV revenues. This is going to undoubtedly tarnish dela Hoya's legacy and further solidifies his image as a greedy, spoiled fighter, who despite losing to Sugar Shane, Tito Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins and Mayweather, Dela Hoya still got 70-30 revenue in his favor in ALL, I repeat, in all those fights. Well Oscar don't push your luck to far golden boy, dont you forget your luster isnt shining anymore. Your worth when you were 25 is not the same as your worth when you're HOW OLD? 35? Geeez! Dela Hoya has not met anyone of PACQUIAO's class. Pacman is not cheap. He fights with all his heart and might. That is principle in the highest order.
Thursday Aug 14, 2008
nate barr:  Freddie Roach is like a father to Pac-Man. He also trained Oscar. Perhaps, Roach knows something about both fighters none of us do. If he says Manny can beat DLH, even so tauntingly as to call it a possible KO win, then I'd believe Roach more than any pundit or scribe.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
mike:  But when again can an opportunity for a fight so rich in history, excitement and war happen as in the ODLH-Pacquiao fight? We cannot be better than the judgment of Roach, Pacquiao and Dela Hoya themselves on this issue. I hope to one day wake up to an annoucement that the fight - for the sake of the fans - is a go after all.

donputo69:  this types of fights are the reason boxing gets no love...this is goin to be the mismatch of the year, pacquiao is the p4p right now, but he should stick to fighting guys his size....one left hook from oscar could end his career....plus oscar promised to fight the winner of cotto-margarito, now hes tryna pu$$y out of a real challenge vs margarito....but i kinda feel him....if this is his last fite,he doesnt wanna risk gettin beat up.but he will toy with pacquiao if this shit happens
Friday Aug 15, 2008
alvin:  DLH needs at least 2 more fights before he calls it quits - one against Pacman for obvious monetary reasons and the orther against Margarito. People are starting to call him a coward for allegedly ducking Margarito. DLH has to take on Margarito now. Win or lose, this will finally shut up the doubters.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
Justin:  I woul like to see Pacman vs Ricky Hatton,Does anyone else????
Friday Aug 15, 2008
rudy:  Agree w/Big. Oscar retire, quit being a damn drama queen - looking like the Brett Favre of boxing. Manny fight Soto and go to unify the titles at 135. Roach Coach needs to shut up, looking more and more like a money hungry SOB -- selling out for $$. And like Real Deal mentioned, he's looking like a bogus ass trainer lately, Kirilov gets blasted, Vazquez dumps him then goes on to whoop Marquez twice, and now all this BS of pushing HARD for the Oscar fight, G-R-E-E-D-Y. That looks more like a Toughman Competition than a Heavyweight Tournament, freaking bums!
Friday Aug 15, 2008
ka pe:  would like to watch manny vs oscar dela hoya.. then he can fight anybody..
Friday Aug 15, 2008
FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:  “Manny would knock out Oscar,” says Roach. “He’s just too fast for Oscar." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Freddie "The Joke Coach" Roach is a SUCK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TRAINER.He believing Pacquiao had even the slightest chance againt De la Hoya is bad enough for me to laugh at his sorry ass mentality trainer that he has. He can't teach nothing. Pacquiao can't box. Pacquiao's success was made just by his natural physical abilities, in other words his strength, that's it. Pacquiao can take you out with one punch, but he can't box. Fighting at a 147 pounds would make Pacquiao a tune up fighter level. And I'm glad the De la Hoya fight has broken down. Can't believe people were even defending De la Hoya in making that ridiculous circus. HOWEVER, he's right when is he doesn't want Pacquiao to fight Soto. 'La Zorrita' will outbox and defeat Pacquiao. Marquez, and Nate Campbell can't fight in November, win or lose (Marquez will defeat Casamayor), so Soto's due up. So Pacfans, no matter who's next De la Hoya, or Soto, Pacquiao's reign at the Top is near its end.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P KING:  We as fans criticize, judge, and predict on a fight. But we must not discredit trainers for their judgement on a coming fight, I agree on some parts that Roach is saying but definitely not about Pacman knocking out Oscar. He can stand in there and trade and maybe hurt Oscar a little bit but not to a point where he can knock him to the canvas. I would rather love to hear a Pacquaio vs mayweather @140lbs.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
Smiley C:  Boo, hoo, hoo, woppy do! Nobody cares what BigDaddy wants. I'll like a bout between Pacman and the Golden Boy. BigDaddy wants a bigger brains, but it is too late for him. Fo' sure!
Friday Aug 15, 2008
Sodamn Insane:  Non PPV material. ODLH vs Sergio Mora or wash out Tito Trinidad or Moseley PPV Material ODLH vs Margarito , Pacman or Cotto
Friday Aug 15, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P KING:  Scareweather not so legend, i thought you only comment on Pretty Girls' articles only, well since you're on let me break it down. Soto will get knock the f*ck out if he faces the Pacman!!!The reason is, he fough Bobby the little bro right? Did you see the fight? Bobby rocked him pretty with a right hook and that's only Bobby imagine a hook or a straight left from Manny lol. Besides Soto does not box he is an aggresive fighter get you facts straight. Pacquaio can't box? Was the D.Diaz fight not enough proof of his improved boxing skills.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P KING:  I think you are just hating on the Pacman because he has improved on his boxing skills and ring generalship. He can box and be aggressive like no one else can. As for Marquez, Campbell, and Casamayor those are great matchups for him. But I'd rather see him school Floyd at 140lbs if he decides to come out of that hole.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
rudy:  #1 Pacfan, your boxing knowledge is horrible. Soto rocked vs B-Pac?? LOL!!! Moron, Soto completely dominated that fight and utterly destroyed Manny's bro -- he punished him. They were suppose to make Manny-Soto after but because the Joke Roach Coach is afraid of Soto it never happened, Roach knows that Soto would f**k Manny up -- thats why he's avoiding the hell out of him. Improved boxing skills against Diaz??? LOL again. Dude he beat David Diaz the WORST alphabet titlist at 135, whose biggest accomplishment was upsetting Zab in the 96 olympic trials. I'll give you that he beat Diaz impressively, but nothing to gloat about - he had his way with a MUCH weaker opponent. It was a given that he would that title, why TR and Arum agreed to put him in there w/Diaz. And lets see, Soto crushed B-Pac in 6/2007 and fight was suppose to happen after that.....instead a BOGUS rematch w/Barrera..fair to say that Manny is avoiding Soto.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Against who???????? David "G.I. Joe" Diaz??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That guy SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even a blown and washed up Morales knocked him down and many saw Morales beat him. Diaz was the most SUCKASS Champion at Lightweight. Any good Lightweight will beat Paquiao: Marquez (who beat Pacquiao last time and EVERYBODY knows this), Casamayor, Campbell, Juan Diaz, and yes, Soto ALL OF THEM would beat Pacquiao. And guess what: Humberto Soto's next and even Roach's feets are trembling of FEAR. How ironic, Pacman's sponsored by "NO FEAR", well, I guess his trainer is HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, #1pacfan P4P KING, better change to another name, because the P4P Top spot will be vacant in November. This November, Pacman goes: G A M E O V E R... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday Aug 15, 2008
might66:  What Soto could beat the Pacman, are you kidding me, even the Mexican don't consider him Championship material. Even his champion Mexican fellowmen doesn't want to fight him because he is a waste of time . Nate Campbell is a joke, he can't even knockout Juan Diaz who won over David Diaz by just a small margin of points. Floyd Mayweather, what an assho......., he is a calculating businessman who fight fighters that he think he could beat. Why don't he fight Margarito and other good fighters out there in his weight class. Pacman have meet all the challenges that was brought in front of him. Watch a boring Mayweather fight if you can.
Friday Aug 15, 2008
noning:  OSCAR is afraid of Manny that is why hes moving heaven and earth to scrap the fight!!! ODLH is a boring fighter now.. look at the fight with Forbes.. nahhh!!! in the middle of fight i found myself snoring!!! I think the fight with MANNY and ODLH is a good fight !!!
Friday Aug 15, 2008
The Real Deal:  Tell Oscar that minimum weight Ricardo "Finito" Lopez is coming out of retirement..lol I'm sure he would want to fight another smaller guy. Don't be suprised if the Oscar/Pacquiao fight still happens because Oscar would do anything to try and get a win. He knows he can't beat Margarito, I won't even say beat Margarito. He doesn't want to get into a WAR! He knows he might get broken ribs, maybe even stopped with another bodyshot. He might even get his face busted up. Oscar is truly a COWARD! I have no respect for him. Oscar's legacy to me is that he never won a big fight, he got his reputation on fighting smaller guys. Freddie Roach is saying he would waive his fee if Pacquiao loses to Delahoya. Freddie is greedy just like Oscar. He's only saying that because, yes he would waive his trainers fee but he didn't say that he would waive his part managers fee. It's a trick to try and make the stupid regular fan that Pacquiao has a chance. Freddie knows Pacquiao will make a lot of money and that's all he cares about. I don't have a problem with a trainer making money but don't try and make a fight that really no one wants to see other then the Filipino fans who thinks Pacquiao could beat Wladimir Klitschko.
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P KING:  I never said that Bobby Pacquaio beat Soto I said Bobby rocked the hell out em in third round I think. Read every single word I write before you jump the gun boy. Who is Soto anyway who has he beaten? Has he made a name for himself? No. His fights are controversial because he can't finish the job.
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P "Legend":  Everyone is still crying about the Marquez fights that he won. Stop that bull he lost plain and simple go send a letter the judges and cry to them. But I can honestly say that Pacman has lost that FIRE and HUNGER that he once desire. Money changes everybody and that's the bottom line.
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P \:  Here are the fights I would like to see: Pacquaio vs Marquez 3 "Finish the Job" Pacquaio vs Casamayor, Campbell, J.Diaz, Katsidis, "Take out Division" PACQUAIO VS mayweather @140lbs " FIGHT OF THE CENTURY"
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
Waldorf:  Now you know the Pac man can't deal with boxer who can move, NATE. Joel, would beat him, PBF would make him look like a fool.
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, yeah, so we're the ones "crying" about it, but WHO'S THE ONE BRINGING UP THE EXCUSES?????!!!!: "But I can honestly say that Pacman has lost that FIRE and HUNGER that he once desire. Money changes everybody and that's the bottom line." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're crying, but the EXCUSES comes from the other side of the court !!!!!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your boy won and YOU'RE putting up excuses and reasons; wanna know why? BECAUSE YOU KNOW HE LOST THAT FIGHT!!!!!!!! Plain and simple. And Soto can't finish the job? What "finishing the job" to you means? I guess you're referring to KO's (Like ALWAYS) finishing the job is WINNING. Plain and SIMPLE. But don't worry, we'll have PLENTY of time to diss each other. Looks like your boy's going after Soto. And you'll have three to four months to back your player up and talk all the trash you want......But come this November: G A M E O V E R... Soto will FINISH THE JOB (WIN) on Pacquiao....Plain and Simple...
Saturday Aug 16, 2008
donputo69:  wow..scareweather not so legend finally is right....you said $$$$$$ change's everything?....so what do you think now about your girl scareweather?...OHHH OK...i rest my case you bozo....and who's soto has beatin?..i think manny will have a party time with soto.....holla back ladies!!!!!
Sunday Aug 17, 2008
The Real Deal:  Soto is bigger version of Juan Manuel Marquez that takes more chances. He is faster, and punches much sharper and harder then Marquez.. I have been in Camp with this kid. He's really a very good fighter. If he fights Pacquiao he will have his moments where he is going to hurt Pacquiao. This is a very good test for Pacquiao. Soto is from Los Mochis and a lot of very good fighters come from there.
Sunday Aug 17, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P "Legend":  Who has Soto knocked out? A bunch of no names, he couldn't even hurt Juarez, this guy is no Margarito who they feared it's just that he fought a bunch of fighters that was not caliber type. I know one thing you want to know Marquez turn down a fight with Soto's camp.
Sunday Aug 17, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P \:  When I mean Pacquaio has lost the desire and fire to win. I don't say it as an excuse, if we was seeing the old Pac he would stay in the Lightweight division and make a name for himself in there but with money involved you start to see changes. And to Waldorf Pretty boy has no punching power whatsoever, Hatton had a glass chin, Gatti was an old washed up fighter, Corrales had no chin and no defense, and that's all I can remember who he knocked out that were known fighters. I really would like to see PBF come out and fight Pacquaio @140 there is a strong argument that this fight is possible. I mean come on they were willing to take on Oscar.
Sunday Aug 17, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P "Legend":  Pacquaio KO via 9th round over Soto.
Sunday Aug 17, 2008
FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!::  Soto via UD over Pacquiao in November.
Monday Aug 18, 2008
Smiley C:  Manny knocks out Soto early. Soto is a bozo. Holla!
Monday Aug 18, 2008
donputo69:  manny will take sotito to school...MANNY VIA TKO IN THE 10TH ROUND....holla back!!!!!!!
Monday Aug 18, 2008
rudy:  Manny gets punished by La Zorrita. The Joke Roach Coach aint going to let his cash cow go into a fight with him, he's going to punk out. Like I said b4, Manny's been avoiding Soto since he beat the $h!t out of his brother and put an end to his career. He'll do the same to the WacMan
Monday Aug 18, 2008
Isaiah:  Manny will KO Soto in the 8th. You all heard it here first.
