Ouch. Time for USA Boxing to take a hard look in the mirror and make multiple changes. Botox won't do; it's time for heavy duty surgery.

One (A Measly Bronze) And Done

By Michael Woods

The US went out with a whimper, a weak one at that, instead of a bang in Beijing. The last remaining United States boxer, heavyweight Deontay Wilder, was bounced in the semifinals Friday by Italy’s Clemente Russo in a 7-1 decision.

The 6-8 Wilder, age 22, will get a bronze, so the US will at least leave China with something besides a bad taste in their mouths. This was the worst showing by the US squad, led by head coach Dan Campbell, in Olympic history.

“It was a good fight, but I think it was sloppy. A lot of the points that he scored, I didn’t agree with because the only punches I felt were on the back of my neck,” the Alabaman Wilder said to the AP. “The whole thing was to get in there and have fun and I did.”

Russo, age 26,  is the reigning world champion, so to look on the bright side, at least the 2007 national Golden Gloves champ Wilder didn’t get trounced by a bum. Andre Ward had beaten Russo early in the 2004 Games.

Wilder didn’t start boxing until the fall of 2005, so personally, this outing is something of a triumph. He is easy to root for, as he is providing for his little girl, Naieya, who was born with spina bifida. He holds a full time job driving for a beverage company and works at Red Lobster on the weekends for extra cash. He has a tendency to hold his hands too low, wait too long to get off, and has balance issues, so clearly, he is a work in progress, but here’s hoping his fast-track growth translates into the pro game.

For the team and the national program, the bronze does little to remove the tarnish. It is time to refashion the program. Manny Steward, or Teddy Atlas, want the job?

deepwaters:  manny steward would make the team worse then it is. chinas zou shiming has the perfect style for amatuer boxing. study cuban and soviet succesful boxers.they have the best ring generalship and focus on counterpunching and moving. thats the olympic system. you need the big counterpunch, its pretty much the only punches these judges score.

Peter:  Maybe now that Mayweather is retired or DeLaHoya is about to retire they could coach the team. Maybe they could coach it together and turn it into a reality show on tv. Then at the end of the next olympics they could fight each other in a mega fight rematch. Take that ultimate fighter on spike.

Radam G in Beijing:  Congrals to Wilder. He will be ever to treasure that bronze medal forever. It becomes value in a few years. Holla!

Radam G in Beijing:  My bad! He will be able.... Holla!

Porcupine:  One of the problems with Americans is that we care too much about the fighter's personal lives. Wilder's child and what he does to support her is not our business and should be his private business until he actually accomplishes something. But I guess when a fighter has no talent you have to find something interesting about them

959 Santa:  Teddy Atlas?. Gimmie a break. Luckily he did not score the Olympic fighting. Teddy Atlas in 2012 isn't that when the world is supposed to end. Manny Steward geez might as well make Buddy McGirt the head honcho for the USA.

TOMMY R:  We got Porcpine saying that an olypic bronze medalist has no talent lmao!!!!!!!! need a really say more?

Porcupine:  His daughter's condition is the only noteworthy fact about him. Did you read any of Woods' description of him? Being 6'8" is his only strength...kinda like Tye Fields and Nick Valuev. Are they talented?

Peter:  Saying someone has or doesn't have talent, skill, physicality, or whatever is a relative thing. And it doesn't make sense to compare an amateur fighter to a top level pro fighter who has much more experience. Congrats to Wilder for doing his best. Though I do agree that people's personal lives are their own private business.

Isaiah:  Trivia fact. Some time in the 1940's maybe "48", the U.S. got only one medal from boxing like this time, but that one was a silver. As recent as the year 2000, we had a couple guys in the Olympics called Jermain Taylor, Kelly Pavik, Andre Ward, etc. Maybe you all've heard of them? What has happened in 8 years that we suck so much more now?

Anony:  :::: Did anybody miss the part that he started boxing in 2005???? That's the real story Bozos!!!!!! How come you don't feel inspired by a 22 years old, who started boxing only three years ago, who has a little girl who needs all his attention and won the ONLY US boxing medal???? All of you should feel ashame calling him "slow" or "inexperienced" or whatever? I tell you what's the problem with US boxing is. The problem is that countries who didn't have GOOD or HIGH LEVEL programs in the past, do HAVE THEM NOW. They train, they eat, they gym and they fight like the US Boxing team. It means, the competition got harder (or to the same level as USA) and it shows. The Olympic scoring is to blame as well, yes, but look at the lack of discipline and lack of respect to the trainer. What you get back? Answer: What is on the table right now. no medals, no glory. Maybe now Wilder is seen as "the only medal" but in the future he might be seen as the "the only boxer who fulfilled his dream of an Olympic medal inspiring other boxers to pursue the same no matter how hard your personal life is". Puerto Rico didn't win but at least I'm proud they behaved as a team and worked hard to get there. I truly wish somebody like Teddy Atlas could train the US team, he definetly has the experience to coach. I mean, on how many fights he had the opportunity to be first row? thousands? Even in the Olympics. And he loves to analyze every fighter to the detail. That experience should help any team.

greg:  I coach boxing and from my view point our fighters did not respect their coach or coaches very much! This must change we must have a strong coach that is a no nonsense guy.Thats all kids understand today. Give me a kid with less talent and 1 -2 year to work with him ,him buying into our fighting system and I guarantee we come back w/ more than a bronze medal in 2012 or 2016.
