Oscar Shifts Toward Paul Williams
By David A. Avila
A new candidate has emerged in the hunt for Oscar De La Hoya whose company has squabbled with Manny Pacquiao over percentages for a December meeting.
The new candidate is big Paul “The Punisher” Williams, who has been seeking an opponent himself the past few months.
“Paul Williams name has come up and we’re definitely thinking of a match between him and Oscar,” said Eric Gomez, a matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions. “He’s definitely being considered.”
Few gave Williams a chance at all of meeting De La Hoya let alone new WBA welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito. Recent attempts to make a match with Kelly Pavlik and Winky Wright also proved unattainable.
Dan Goossen, president of Goossen-Tutor Promotions, said his protégé Williams nearly was signed to fight Wright in late September but the fight was ditched by HBO, which decided to go in another direction. Apparently that direction is now Shane Mosley colliding with Nicaragua’s Ricardo Mayorga on Sept. 27 at the Home Depot in Los Angeles.
Williams seemed stonewalled and sought a rematch with Margarito who re-established himself as the killer of the welterweight division after obliterating Puerto Ricans Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto.
Margarito wants De La Hoya too but Golden Boy Promotions does not seem to like the match.
“They told me that Oscar didn’t want to fight a Mexican for his last fight,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum last month.
Another candidate is East L.A.’s Sergio “the Latin Snake” Mora, a Mexican-American and not a Mexican national, who captured the WBC junior middleweight title from Vernon Forrest and is set for a rematch on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas.
“If Sergio Mora wins that fight he’s another possibility,” said Golden Boy’s Gomez on Sunday.
With De La Hoya announcing that his last fight will be on Dec. 6, it seems everyone in boxing has offered to be his dance partner for the final fling in the ring including Roy Jones Jr., Winky Wright, and Forrest.
Last month new WBC lightweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao’s name was thrown in the hat but negotiations have stalled and that may signal that De La Hoya just doesn’t like the match with the much smaller Pacquiao, who is considered the best fighter Pound for Pound, but is simply much too small.
“If Oscar knocks him out people will say Pacquiao was too small anyway, and if he loses people will say Oscar was never that good in the first place,” said one matchmaker from a rival boxing promotion company who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s a no-win situation for De La Hoya if he faces Pacquiao.”
Negotiations stalled after Pacquiao refused a 30 percent offer of the purse while De La Hoya would take 70 percent.
Don’t expect De La Hoya to budge on the numbers and here’s the reason why: De La Hoya regularly averages nearly 1 million pay-per-views and set the record at 2.4 million pay-per-views when he fought Floyd Mayweather in 2007.
Pacquiao’s last fight against David Diaz on pay-per-view barely passed 200,000 buys. Those are not strong enough to make any demands.
When asked if Pacquiao was the only real opponent considered Gomez said definitely that was not the case, to the surprise of this reporter.
“Paul Williams is being considered,” said Eric Gomez matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions. “He’s definitely an alternative.”
A few weeks ago, the long armed Williams was sitting in a San Fernando Valley restaurant called Sisley’s and wondering who would have the guts to step up. Now it could be De La Hoya but that should be no surprise. The East L.A. fighter has often made surprise picks for opponents.
Here’s a few of those past surprises:
In 2000, after Sugar Shane Mosley ran out of opponents in the lightweight division and found few takers in the welterweight level, De La Hoya shocked the boxing world when deciding to accept a fight with the Pomona speedster. At the time Mosley was considered one of the best fighters nobody knew. That fight made Mosley and also was one of the best welterweight clashes ever seen in California.
Two years later De La Hoya shocked the boxing world again when he suddenly accepted a fight with Oxnard’s Fernando Vargas who had been chasing him for six years. The East L.A. fighter had said for years he would not give Vargas a chance to make money from a fight with him, but suddenly turned around and agreed to meet Vargas. He stopped the former junior middleweight strongman in 2002.
In 2004, the biggest shocker of all occurred when De La Hoya surprisingly accepted a match against middleweight world champion Bernard Hopkins who had dominated the division for years with little pay. In that fight De La Hoya held his own for eight rounds and was even ahead on one judge’s scorecard before Hopkins landed a perfectly placed left hook to the body. The next surprise came when Hopkins became a partner with Golden Boy and then came Mosley.
De La Hoya loves challenges, not easy wins, history has shown. Sure he’s taken a few fights in the past five years that were mere tune-ups, like his bout against Steve Forbes, but not many. It makes sense that the East L.A. fighter would be willing to meet WBO titleholder Williams.
“Oscar has said before that he wants to fight the best welterweight and that’s Paul Williams,” said Goossen. “Williams beat Margarito so it makes sense.”
Now, Williams, who seemed to be left in limbo, has a chance to make at least $10 million if De La Hoya picks his number.
“Oscar is the biggest name in boxing without a doubt,” said Goossen. “Williams is the most feared fighter.”

What a joke. I have an opponent for you Oscar: Antonio Margarito. Or better yet, Kelly Pavlik. You always fight smaller guys. Why don't you take a real challenge and try and beat KP? Big money for you both and if you somehow win (miracles can happen), you're legacy is complete beyond your wildest dreams. No, instead you're looking for Vic Darchinyan or Erik Morales. What a joke.

The explosiveness and the magnitude of power and speed that Pacquiao possesses can KO De La Hoya cold. This can happen now that DLH does not have the mobility he used to have in his aging legs. DLH is a veteran warrior pretty much aware of the danger Pacquiao brings in the ring to any opponent he faces. Juan Marquez is an example of a very crafty fighter that hides and attacks like a fly but was not able to scape from getting KO'd from by MP's speedy fists. DLH knows the LARGER THAN LIFE EMBARRASSMENT that can happen to him if he goes ahead with his plan to trade leathers with MP. Even if MP would agree the 70-30 deal DLH will find a way to avoid Manny. In my own opinion this fight is not gonna happen for this reason.

why not have dela hoya vs miguel cotto duel?
cotto is puerto rican and is ready to match gloves with dela hoya. although it's a punch fight... cotto will win by ourpointing dela hoya in total hits.
roach's proposal of 60-30 is a fair price leaving 10% to the winner. if dela hoya can't absorb this... dela hoya may lose his mexican fans.
oscar in his boxing twilight career appears to be intensifying his chicken in his blood.

Fight will never happen since it's a lose-lose situation for ODLH. If ever it will happen, I see it as the same scenario as the DD Vs PACMAN. The way I see it is Bob Arum fulfulling his promise to Pacman To Market him in USA. As a boxing fan, I wanted this fight to happen. Who knows?

Well, its just okay if Oscar vs. pacman wont happen, after all its boxing that lossess the opportunity in showing the world of its glory by introducing what could have been the most exciting and intriguing fight. DLH may have really realized in bringing more black eye on his boxing career full of gold but with significant defeats from best fighter like pacman.

Give Pacman 40% share and he will go out and eat Old Oscar with a Power Up! No other opponent available for ODLH who have more charisma to attrack PPV than Pacquiao. ODLH will sweat gallons first before he could demolish the flashing Pacman, but the very big question still is "if he could still pull the trigger" after he sweats?? for me, Oscar just couldn't! and I think Manny would bet the 5% share of the $-pie on that.

One thing that most people missed in this OLDHvsPACman that “ Pro Boxing is beyond Sport, it is a profession!”. OLDH vs PACMAN is not fighting for any Alphabet Title Belt. They are basically fighting for “ Fame, History & MONEYYYYY!!!”… So I suggest to spice up this bout for the interest of all spectators, to abort any scripted fight that is eminent and get our moneys worth on PPV!!!, OLDH should get 60% and PACMAN 30%. The remaining 10% will be their price whoever won this fight. Both are gamblers and both love to fight each other. They say it’s personal….so lets get it ONNNN…

Yes indeed Marquez was not KO by MP but he does KISS the CANVAS so many times. I wonder how does it feels so embarrassed. If ever a fight with JMM against MP 3 happends in 135 pounds as lightweights, Boy MP will surely make him hit the Canvass for GOOD... Take note of that...

Now, where is that respect De la Hoya had been preaching about that Margarito owes and has an unfinished business with Margarito? Talks about fighting Williams now is total disrespect, an utter violation of their self made principle, which makes no sense at all. The ODLH camp are doing all kinds of excuses and manipulations. I believe that fighting outside of Margarito or Pacquiao, he won't be able to generate interests in the paying public. It won't be a thriller full action packed fight. ODLH now claims Williams is the best welterweight, most feared fighter is a crap, and I can't imagine how this writer is buying it. You should be writing something of substance not controversial full of lies. Pacquiao's last fight did not make a good showing in the PPV buys because of gas prices people even opted for public transportation from their own cars, big SUV's are now selling far below expected sales and most owner's trying to get rid of them at street prices. The poor PPV sales are attributed to all time gas prices not on Pacquiao's being a crowd pleaser.

This fight against Williams really doesn't excite me at all. If he wants to fight a tall welterweight who will engage and fight...why not Cintron? Williams will use his reach and dance around and we'll all be bored to death at the end. If there is one thing we've learned about Cintron...smart or not...suggested or not...he's not afraid to mix it up. Add that to his incredible KO power and that adds up to one spectacular farewell for DeLahoya! Williams is a bore with a small following of interested fans. Everyone loves to watch someone who brings serious KO's to the ring. Cintron is 29-2 with 27 KO's. In 31 professional fights, 29 of them have ended with a KO! 27 in his favor and 2 with him on the canvas. I'll pay to watch that!!

The Real Deal:
|
Delahoya would never get in the ring with Williams. To many disadvantages. Williams is much faster, much taller, long arms, jabs too much, throws too many punches, has better movement and the southpaw style would kill Oscar. Oscar is not strong enough to keep Williams off of him. Oscar is too easy to hit. BAD MATCHUP for Oscar. The article says Oscar has always taken risk, I don't think this risk Oscar would take. I might be wrong but NO WAY will Oscar fight this guy.

This is the best fight for ODLH, because Margarito is ducking, Paul, and PAC is ducking Nate, Guzman and Marquez, don't give none of these ducker a big payday. Paul is the best unretired WW and will give ODLH the last fight legacy. These guy can't demand a thing, if they can't take 10 to 20 mil, let them eat cake, it's their greedy (arum) manager. PAC, Margarito, Cotto get new management or managers yourselves. Cotto only got 3 mil for that war with Margarito, B.S. ::::::::: FILIPINOS "PACDELIRIUM" CAN'T SEE PAST THEIR NOSES :::::::: Can u all filipinos here (and other world pacdelirium fans) realize that Oscar vs. Pac is not going to happen????? Why do you think Pacquiao is not talking about it????? HE DON'T WANT THE FIGHT !!!!!!!!! Do you think if he was REALLY interested about it he wouldn't be bitching and calling for further negotiations?????? FOOLS!!!!! Learn to read the fine print behind all this. The only one hoping for the fight are you all crazy fans who think Pacman is Batman and he looks more like a little Robin against DLH. So...... go on and root for the only possible and HONORABLE fight -- DLH vs. TITO TRINIDAD!!!!!!!!! Then they both will retire rich and finally settle the outcome of their first fight. Williams is not a business wise decision and DLH knows it. Even if he wins to Williams, he will end up badly beaten and short of 5 to 10 millions. It is better choice to be beaten by Tito and make the most money out of it. STOP THE PACDELIRIUM!!!!!!!!!

@ bolitz, When giving a english lesson always be sure to get your post 100% perfect, its knockED down. Just thought i'd clear that up. Also the reason Marquez doesn't feel embarrassed about KISSING THE CANVAS is because Pacman has incredible power at that weight class and when he was'nt on his ar$e he was giving Manny a boxing lesson. BTW, that cannot be argued because without the knockdowns he would have lost both fights on the judge's scorecards. I wonder where Manny would be without his numbing power because he ain't that good a boxer, he's easy to hit and can definitely be hurt (as he was against Marquez in fight 2 and numerous other fights) not to mention he's a wildman and he swings from his heels. He wont have a power advantage against Oscar and he will be brutally, BRUTALLY ko'd. FACT!! I will not be replying to anything else, thats how I feel and we shall have to agree to disagree.

I think the pacman should not fight the Golden Boy. Better to wait the result of the Magic Man vs the Hit Man fight then challenge who ever win. The Golden Boy is too big for the Pacman and has the capability to hurt him. Pacman you dont have to prove your status being the number one in the world, because you already did it. You beat the best Mexicans Fighter, you've got the first Asian to have four Belt in different division, First Filipino to win Ligthweight crown, First Filipino Athlete to be Known all over the Globe, what can you ask for! Wait for the right fight. Iam a Filipino i dont want you to suffer and ritire with a serious damage. I hope that ODD vs Pacman would not happen. GodBless!!!!

Young Oscar would take out Manny fast. But old Oscar will get hit a lot. A LOT. If Manny forgets he's a little guy and tries to trade with Oscar like he's Jake LaMotta, well yes, Oscar would probably KO him. But I still think this match-up has the makings of a good fight and I give Manny the edge in a UD. It would be a good fight, not a great fight. Why? Two reasons. One: Oscar is just old. Two: Manny may have the aggression of a young Roberto Duran but he's never shown all the skills, and an old Oscar is not the man to test them. A better fight would be Manny and Money. Oops, I said the recent retiree's name! Sorry, folks.

I believe if oscar takes the fight with the 2nd best welterweight in the world P. williams this can be either a good boxing match or someone definatelly can get knocked out. P williams is strong but I think Delahoya can still pull the upset you can never count out delahoya. P williams has a tough chin and is a durable fighter. If he comes the way he did against Quitana (the first fight) he will be eating leather if he comes prepared he or delahoya will hit the canvas. Tough fight but payperview material.

The best comment I have read so far is from another TSS reader who said... "what happens if round 1 starts and DLH lands a big left hook and KO Pacquiao, where is the glory in that?????" You see, this is a very realistic scenario and the biggest fools will be the ones who will pay $50.00+ for the PPV. Being-a-fan, I agree that there are many other fights that going to be great that we can look forward too seeing but I still would like to ODLH fight anyone else other then Pacquiao. True boxing fans like most of the one's on TSS want to see Oscar fight either Margarito, Williams or just someone his size. I'm almost certain that Oscar wants no part of Williams. Will all due respect to your sources there is no chance that De La Hoya is fighting Paul Williams. This fight will not happen period. Nice storyline though. This is a high risk low reward opponent like Margarito and Williams has no star power. The biggest money fight out there is Pacquiao as it will draw international fans also. With Hatton and Mayweather out of the picture, i think Pacquaio is the fight to make. Oscar is about the money now, not his legacy otherwise he would be signing to fight Margarito. Margarito would probably take only a 10% cut to get that fight.

Bad business decision of course (the one Pacquiao should not make). Tito against Oscar is an even fight and has more money involve than even Margarito or Williams. LIKE IT OR NOT, after Pacquiao, the only one who can bring big PPV numbers is Tito Trinidad. And I'm not saying this because I'm Puertorican, there is just no glory for Oscar fighting and winning to a smaller fighter. Against Tito it will draw more attention from the media and from real Boxing fans alike. Why anyone is listening to this????? Too much Filipinos here I guess.

The most important thing is the pride. Why not give the 60/40 percent shares for Manny. Manny Pacquaio is the most exciting fighter today while Oscar is done. Oscar should prove something bec he is no longer the same fighter as before.
For my opinion the more money should go to the winner.
In my heart, I know that Oscar will be knock out by Manny the same prediction that Freddie roach said.
Oscar is avoiding fighting Manny. He knows that he is already slower, old and done in his prime.
Manny in 10 rounds if the fight will gonna happen bec. Oscar will be ran out of gas.

The Real Deal:
|
How can anyone say that Delahoya and Pacquiao is the most exciting fight that everybody wants to see? No way in the world do anyone other then Delahoya or the filipinos want to see such a fight. Like Margarito said, Delahoya is running scared. We knew he wouldn't fight Williams either. He was just saying that to use as a smoke screen. Whether he wins or losses his image as a fighter will be looked at as this COWARD! who never fought the fight that the real boxing public wanted him to fight. It's really funny that he could fight an old Julio C. Chavez 2 times but he won't fight Margarito. Chavez was much smaller then Oscar and older, but he gave Delahoya a chance. I am definitely one of those guys who will not be buying this
fight. They will announce Oscar fighting Manny tomorrow. THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR BOXING!!

You're probably right Anony there are many Filipinos here and other boxing forums as well because of Pacquiao. You might want to read this article: Joe Fight Fan Should Be Cheering, Not Jeering, Pacquiao's Fanatical Followers! by Michael Marley from boxingconfidential. Why are you so concerned with someone who's about to retire and someone who has retired twice? You're making boxing less and less popular because you want it to be exclusive for "the real boxing fans" and from your statements I assume not only do you hate Pac but Filipinos as well. I understand why you are so eager to have Hoya's last fight against a fellow countryman. Wait for your turn, your time will come again.

:::: Mark Castro::: I love all Filipinos but Radam G (but everyone pick on him anyways), now you come to the scenario and I don't like you.. but that's a personal thing, you could be from Netherlands or the Antarctica and still I will not like you and the way you try to deviate my comments into something racial... You see, I live in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico were races and cultures are mix and we don't get to understand why the racial hate, discrimination and "pointing out" exist. So.. if you need an answer to your stupid point of view... sit and wait. I don't get involve in low level conversations... yes, like yours.

Wow! Puerto Rico is Utopia. Yea! Right! I've been there. This fool needs to talk to my pal Hector Camacho. There is plenty of fools on the island hating skin color and income status, "discriminat(ing)and 'pointing out.'"Hawaii is the only melting-pot society, where skin, income and features are not cared a whole lot about. Holla!

::::: SORRY IT IS TRUE, WE DISCRIMINATE ON "FLASHY CLOWN NIUYORICANS" LIKE CAMACHO WHO WAVE OUR FLAG AND CALL THEMSELVES PART OF OUR CULTURE WITHOUT SHOWING RESPECT TO THE REAL PEOPLE AND PERSONALITY THAT MAKES A REAL PUERTORICAN ::::: get it??? and we don't live in Utopia but we don't have those racial discrimination you find in the states or europe. That mold had been break in Latinamerica Bozo, specially in Puerto Rico and I'm very proud of it. Over here you find asians, north americans, europeans and from any other race who just love the way we are as people.. as persons.. as family... And yes, I'm very proud of that side of my culture. I always thought Filipinos were like us... happy humble people. I guess you are a bad example.
