Shamrock has lost five in a row. This is just about his last chance. At 44 1/2, his window is open just a sliver. Will Slice shut it for good?

Does Ken Shamrock Have A Chance Vs. Kimbo?

By Michael Woods

Ken Shamrock has been chosen as the next opponent for The YouTube Heavyweight MMA Champion of the World, Kimbo Slice, and the response in the fightgame web-o-sphere has been mixed.

Some understand that Slice (3-0) is a work in progress, and taking too large a leap in quality of opposition isn't a wise course of action. Others, more vocal and numerous, point out that Shamrock (26-13-2) has lost five straight fights, and has not won a bout since 2004. Both sides make good points, but if were to put on the promoter hat, I would grab the Shamrock bout, for the record.

Slice, age 34,  showed ample holes in his game in his last outing, when he headlined the May 31st CBS/Elite XC show against James Thompson. He gassed out pretty severely in the third round, and had some worried moments on the ground, but he stopped the Brit 38 seconds into the third round.

Shamrock, even at age 44 1/2, is of a higher caliber foe than Thompson, though it is entirely possible that his chin has permanent cracks in it that Slice could exploit quickly. The man formerly known as the World's Most Dangerous Man has succumbed to strikes in each of those five straight losses, so it figures that Slice will play to his strength, his heavy-duty hands, and look to take out Shamrock from second one.

The fight will unfold on CBS on Oct. 4, and will take place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. TSS spoke to Elite XC VP Jared Shaw, the son of boxing promoter Gary Shaw, who a month ago was shifted out of his role as Elite XC president to a consultant role. The younger Shaw defended the choice of Shamrock as the fourth opponent in Slice's young MMA career.

"Ken Shamrock one-hundred percent has a chance to beat Kimbo," said Shaw, age 28. "On the ground, the fight favors Shamrock. He's different from James Thompson in that if he has Slice in his grasp, he can transition to a submission, an ankle lock or whatever."

As far as his losing streak, Shaw points out that two losses came at the hands of the younger lion Tito Ortiz, and he may have been looking past "Buzz" Berry (March 8 KO1 loss) at a Kimbo fight. "Ken wants a storybook ending to his career," Shaw said. "He doesn't want to go out a loser of six in a row."

Kimbo's YouTube rival Sean Gannon was in the mix to get the Shamrock slot, along with Brett Rogers, but the Boston cop wanted too much dough, Shaw said. "If I told you that Gannon was wanting north of $200,000, we'd say he was all the way into Greenland," said Shaw with a chuckle. "His name came up but he priced himself out of it." Rogers (a 6-5, 270 pounder out of Minnesota with an 8-0 record) is being set up to fight the 6-2, 250 pounder Slice, maybe on pay-per-view, early in 2009.

Shaw is on record as understanding that the pay per view model doesn't work for building fans for the future, and has seen what it has done to the boxing fan base, which is aged and shrinking daily. Here's hoping, as a young promoter of the future, he figures out ways to monetize his content, without soaking the fans, and ignoring the need to draw eyeballs with non-PPV programs.

Anony:  Is this a boxing site??????? Or did I fail to find the sweet science web site???? I truly don't care about MMA, UFC or whatever other form of fight that it is not boxing. Boxing is a sport commanded by rules and intelligence. Not a "get lucky from one punch" brawl that should not be called a sport. Is TSS website considering MMA part of "the sweet science"?

joey:  a joke of a fight between a has been and a never was hype job, i can care less who wins they both stink, and as far as mma out doing boxing lets just pull up those ppv #s for 2008 and compare boxing to mma ( which is really just ufc) and one will see that boxing topped mma im a fan of both sports but boxing is the more exciting of the 2 and etched in american history for ever, boxing has been and always will be around and mma which is the new kid on the block is some fun to watch but the hype is dying down from a year and a half back when it totally peaked

Porcupine:  I feel that one Anony. MMA is better than golf but it's the same thing as gathering around a fight in the schoolyard in 8th grade - a lot of improvised wrestling, awkward positions and flailing punches.

Joe T:  I think Shamrock easily takes him down for the submission. www fromthecage com

Peter Egley, Jr.:  I feel a little baited by TSS. It's cool if MMA, UFC, etc., etc has it's fans. But I personally find it just a step up from WWE wrestling!!! Anyway, going back to boxing, TSS's two recent articles on top women boxer "Amazing" Layla McCarter regarding her career and latest fight against Loly Munoz seems to have resulted in Team McCarter appearing a bit desperate to steal some thunder from World Champion Melissa "Huracan" Hernandez. Melissa is set to face fellow Champion Ela "Bam Bam" Nunez in McCarter's homebase of Vegas on a Showtime card, and Luis Tapia of Team McCarter decides to publicity (I mean publicly) call out Hernandez for a rubber match. I have a lot of respect for McCarter, but I think it would be foolish for her to think that her loss to Huracan was a fluke.

Pumpkinescobar:  The question should be does Kimbo stand a chance against Shamrock, Ken is an all time great and he will prove it come fight night, Kimbo is a bum of the street he has no gas in his tank drag him in to later rounds and he will beat himself.

dan:  kimbo is a good fighter with good standup game a little wide with some shot but but has good size, speed agility and power for a 250lber he would be a botter boxer than mma guy , as he has no ground game and in my oppinion is told old to pick it up. how old is he 34 or something like that. now ken this is interesting because he was great but he is just soo old and has looked so bad recently he sgot a shot if it gos to the ground but i think ken will probably get koed. its kind of funny i am 31 now and remember him busting up joyce gracies face when i was a kid.

rudy:  Kimbo KO1 Shamrock. Book it!

Robert Curtis:  Again, if I want to watch sloppy mutants fight, I'll rent "The Hills Have Eyes 2". Shamrock has(or had) serious ground skills. But Kimbo makes Golota and Ruiz look like P4P greats.

Radam G hanging w/my peeps on the best islands in the Pacific and world:  These MMA/UFC bums are like prehistoric men, or at the least like cavemen. I don't know or care who would win in a bout with Shamrockhead or Bimbo Lice. YUP! I am drinking my haterrade and eating my dissandwichs. I'm also eating my native foods -- the best in the world. It's all good. Give both of these cavemen freaks a club and a stone and let them go at it. I won't watch. I love the sweet science of artful hurting too much. I don't won't to see human-style pitbull fighting. Calling Michael Vick! Let him get involve in this legal garbage when he gets out. Holla!

BIGDOGD:  You folks knocking MMA are not really educated on the fight game in that domain and come off pretty ignorant. If you don't like it that is cool but it is totally technical and has its good points. Sorry if you don't like it. Boxing and MMA are on equal footing really. Boxers in a boxing ring would kill most MMA fighters and MMA fighers would kill a boxer in the ring. So be it. I like boxing and MMA. Live and let live.

Anonymous user:  Porcupine: You really shouldn't show that you don't know something so easily. I can understand if you don't like it and I won't try to change your mind but have someone who knows MMA tell what is going on or learn it yourself and I'm sure that you will see something different. Radam G At some point someone has said the same about boxing...maybe you are showing your age. Anony: since you don't like it and don't watch it how are you going to intelligently comment on it. What is that reasoning?

Radam G, giving a big sorry 2 MMA/UFC wishoppers:  Who cares what someone says about boxing? Bull$hit talk the talk, cannot walk the walk. I've watched MMA, Shamrockhead and Bimbo Lice. I'm just glad that a mutty flea didn't hop through my TV screen. These guys are lapdogs and fleabags, not topdawgs. All my real dawgs -- that will be in the sweet science -- Holla!

ghost dog:  OK so I'm a boxing and MMA fan... Apples and oranges everyone! There has been competitive martial arts tournaments for years! All you boxing fans have never complained. Obviously it has never been very marketable. In comes MMA... Pitbull style fighting? Anyone can get knocked out with one punch? Yes, this is all very ignorant... I would get knocked out in one punch 100% of the time in a boxing or MMA ring. A professional boxer has the same opportunity of getting knocked with one punch as the MMA guy does a KO kick/knee/elbow/fist...

Robert Curtis:  I have huge respect for the martial artists and amateur wrestlers who have learned their craft. I have watched real aikido, judo and taekwondo masters in action and it's as elegant and sweet as boxing. The problem is that these MMA jocks are, in most cases, not artists and not even the best athletes. If they were truly gifted athletes, they'd play football. That's where the money is. If they had real courage, they'd box. What I see in MMA are pluggers with a few tricks in a very rudimentary and unevolved sport. The sport has potential, but it is decades away from being anything artistic. Right now, it is Jerry Springer plus beatdowns. No science involved. One man squatting on another man and dropping elbows on his head is not art. The true practioners of the ancient art forms are humble and discreet men with years of commitment and discipline behind them. They don't sell themselves to caveman gladiator spectacle like trannys on Santa Monica Blvd. I'm sorry MMA lovers, but take a look at what you love and expect more. And don't tell me I need to watch more MMA. I've seen plenty and my stomach won't allow me to keep giving that trainwreck of a sport the benefit of any more doubts.

Anony:  :::: TO ANONYMOUS USER :::::: Listen to me very well. Even me, if I get fit and strong have too much probability to score a knock down to one of these guys if ONLY ONE BLOW WITH MY KNEE FINDS THE TARGET IN A MMA FIGHT OR UFC.... Now, will that be fare to a complete athlete who had gone three months preparing for a fight???? It is just toooo easy to be finished by a lucky punch, that is my critic. For me, I will like to see the progress round for round and enjoy both men athleticism, heart and endurance... how can you compare this type of brawl to the the sweet science????? You stick to that, I will stay with my boxing which has thousands of years in the making... By the way, boxing started like that, no gloves, no rules, no skills other than hitting hard and get lucky... why should we go back to the prehistoric age????? Maybe you have a prehistoric brain, that's why you don't id yourself... maybe you don't even know how to write your name sweetie.

keith dudlel formerly anonymous:  Actually the sport has evolved very quickly. The UFC started first to see who and what style of fighter was better. Karate, Boxing, ju jitsu, etc were all invited and many styles compete. Ken Shamrock was a shoot fighter. Gracie primarily used ju jitsu and put UFC on the map. Boxers had there chance to make their mark on the sport but were easily submitted and karate had its chance too. People in MMA learned that they had to be well rounded in fighting so Ju Jitsu took off. Sure it is behind boxing as far as evolution but in no shape or form is it less of an art. That is what you see because you are how do I say it lightly...well ignorant to what is going on. The chess game of being on the ground and avoiding a choke. The stance you have to take to avoid a takedown and punch. Sure. Anyone could get lucky with a punch but that is with anything. I don't mind people not liking something but to start this immature thing my thing is better than your thing is really childish and you calling me sweetie really goes a long way to show how silly you are. You don't know me and I am not trying to start anything against boxing. I enjoy boxing immensely I am just well rounded in what I like. I would dare say that Andei Arlovski is not a top athelete and alough he may not be a top boxer he will start fighting professionally so we shall see. Look what you are saying is JU JITSU (WHICH BEAT ALI), WRESTLING, SAMBO, MUAY THAI and those arts are not legit. MMA combins all of these. Do me a favor and go back a look at ENTER THE DRAGON with Bruce Lee in the first part of the movie he is fight and wins by a submission. This has been around for a while. UFC started more as a toughman competition but HOYCE GRACIE showed that there could be so much more and so did KEN SHAMROCK (he was a shoot fighter first). Finally I seriously doubt you would last in the UFC ring with anyone. You really underestimate those fighters. Take a look at Anderson Silva. Do not forget that I love boxing and I am not against it one bit they are two different sports but both are scientific.

BIGDOGD:  You folks knocking MMA flat out don't know what you are talking about. It's just ignorant babble. Sorry. You stick to your boxing... and I'll watch MMA and Boxing. Keep hoping and wishing about the great matches that never get done. Paying to see one fight per night. Keep touting the superiority of your sport. Keep saying this and that. Fact is just as many see an ant hill and don't realize how intricate it is you folks don't get it in MMA. MMA is infinately more intricate that Boxing...You have to worry about take downs, kicks, punches, etc... oh well the old hang on to what they know...

Peter:  Yeah, but what about Hasim Rahman? Just kidding!!!! I really have no interest in checking out "MMA." Perhaps I will try to learn more about it. TSS has a sister site devoted to it that I've never taken a look at. And the real Bruce Lee (not the one portrayed in that silly movie about his life), yeah, he was cool. And you (Keith) mentioned the Ali vs. the wrestler thing. I would love to see that.
Thursday Aug 28, 2008
Robert Curtis:  Keith, I've been accused of hyperbole before and cop to it. MMA has travelled far fast. It has gone up as fast as boxing's heavyweight division has headed south. But I still give boxing the edge in respect. MMA needs to work out some major bumps. Sorry if I sounded so dismissive. Oh, and I don't remember any wrestler defeating Ali. Inoke just rolled around on the ground kicking Ali's legs so bad that they started to bleed internally. Ali might have been an amputee if he hadn't had good doctors. Ali showed up for an exhibitions and some freak started kicking his legs. But Ali was class. He didn't complain. He just jumped up on the ropes to get away from the weirdo. Officials declared the fight a draw.

Anyway.. I'm not loosing more energy on you. You all Filipinos can have the fight but remember I told you Pacauiao will loose becasue it is a mismatch.. as simple as that. Hey Keith.... this is the sweet science website. MMA will never compare to boxing. That's a dog fight with dog fans alike thirsty for a bloodbath. PERIOD.
