Tarver Predicts KO Over Bad Chad Dawson

By David A. Avila

LOS ANGELES-Under hot Southern California skies outside a popular downtown grill two light heavyweight titleholders converged to promote their upcoming clash. On one side WBC champion Chad Dawson, a young whippersnapper and on the other, IBF and IBO champ Antonio Tarver.

You couldn’t pit two more stark opposites than these two.

The quiet calm of Dawson has snared a match against the sonic boom that is Tarver in a fight that takes place on Oct. 11, at the Palm Casino Resort in Las Vegas for the latter fighter’s titles. The bout will be televised on Showtime along with the heavyweight bout from Berlin featuring WBC champ Sam Peter and former champ Vitali Klitschko.

As usual, Tarver is emphatic.

“Expect a knockout,” said Tarver who is even more animated after learning he is the underdog in the match. “I’m the one with one-punch power.”

Dawson (26-0, 1 NC, 17 KOs) has been chasing Tarver ever since capturing the WBC title and though he worked through a few tough challenges including a dog eat dog war with rugged Glen Johnson, Tarver has been on his bull’s eye for over a year.

“We finally cornered Tarver,” said Gary Shaw, whose company promotes Dawson.

While Dawson was chasing him, Tarver was chasing Joe Calzaghe. But after the Welshman announced he was fighting Roy Jones Jr. then he decided that no other options existed except for Bad Chad.

Especially after his exciting punch fest with the scourge of the light heavyweight division Glen Johnson.

“He fought very well against Glen Johnson, I thought he won the fight, it was close, but he out-boxed Johnson,” said Tarver of Dawson. “I like what Chad brings to the game.”

Tarver, 39, realizes his future is near the end, but not quite now.

“God’s blessed me with this body to be able to continue doing what I do,” Tarver said. “It must be for a reason.”

Though confident in his abilities, he’s not devaluing Dawson’s skills.

“I’m looking at this guy as a serious threat,” said Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs), who is known for his two victories over Roy Jones Jr. and his leading role in the motion picture Rocky Balboa. “The last time I overlooked somebody I got my jaw broken.”

Tarver was referring to his defeat to Eric Harding in 2000 that forced him to wait his turn for an eventual title fight with Jones. It took three years of waiting before his turn came.

The camera shy Dawson knows about waiting too. Ever since he captured the WBC light heavyweight title in 2007 he’s been gunning for Tarver. So when the World Boxing Council said he could not fight Tarver, he dumped the WBC title for the chance to fight the Floridian who won the IBF belt against Clinton Woods last April by decision.

“Just being in the ring with the guy who knocked out my role model Roy Jones Jr., it’s like a dream,” says Dawson, 26 who prepares in Las Vegas. “I’m not about belts, I’m about the money and prestige of beating Antonio Tarver.”

Dawson, a rather quiet and unassuming fighter from Connecticut, now works out of Las Vegas with former light heavyweight champion Eddie Mustapha Muhammad.

“He calls me every day before I go run or when I’m going to the gym,” said Dawson. “He’s teaching me everything I need to know.”

Las Vegas odds makers tab Dawson as the 2-1 favorite over the veteran Tarver.

“I can’t get no respect. I’m the Rodney Dangerfield of boxing,” Tarver said. “He won’t see the shot I hit him with.”

Peter Egley, Jr.:  Sounds like a good match. With so little TV coverage as well as the decline of print media like KO Magazine (defunct, thanks Oscar De La Hoya...), I hardly remember who Tarver is and never heard of Dawson. I do recall Roy Jones getting KO'd twice in a row, but he seems to have bounced back.

hm:  should be a good match. young lion vs. experienced warrior. at least these guys are willing to fight the best fight. too often nowadays boxers want most $ for least opponent(see career of mr. r. jones)

BIgDaddy:  I met Chad at Corrales-Castillo 1, he was signing souvenir pictures ( I still have mine) in the Mandalay Arena foyer. His manager was telling everyone that he was Nard's mandatory. But, I had to call him on it ( Chad was only a prospect at the time). Anyways, he seemed like a nice but serious type guy. I wish him the best of luck and will be rooting for him as always.

Isaiah:  I picked Tarver to win this about a few weeks ago and I'm sticking to my choice. He's not that hard of a hitter considering he hasn't scored a KO in roughly almost 4 and half years, but he'll get the job done. Tarver by Unaminous Desicion. He's a small step up from Glen Johnson who was robbed in his fight with Chad Dawson and I just don't see Dawson beating Tarver.

rudy:  Tarver is a joke. Dawson is about to toy with this daaaayum california raisin. Dawson KO 11.

Radam G enjoying the rain and winds of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Pilipinas:  Look who bragging and talking smack, now -- BigDaddy! What a poser. I got thousands of "souvenir pictures." I'll send you one of me -- lmao -- but you will use it for toilet papers. Because you cannot afford toilet papers. You ain't got no money! So what that you met Chad at Corrales-Castillo I. I know him and his old man. Been knowing them all CD's life. You crack me up, Big-wobbly-headed-jealous-Daddy hater and faker! You'd be crush under my 10,000-dollar bill. Oh yea, Bobby Curtis, none of these big bills are in circulation now. But a $1,000 has Cleveland Grover on it. A $500 one has William McKinley on it. A $5,000 one has James Madison on it. On the $10,000 one is Salmon P. Chase -- the only non-president on currency, with the exception of Susan B and a few Native Americans (American Indians). Holla!

Yuvie:  I gotta say, besides Margarito/Cotto, this is the fight I most look forward to. Should be a great fight, mainly because it's so hard to pick a winner. It's a 50/50 type of fight. If Dawson looked better against Johnson, he'd no doubt be the big favorite. He was poor and Tarver's performance against Woods was boxing art, which not many saw coming. I'm edging slightly towards Dawson. I don't think he's quite had that talked about performance yet & I believe he's gonna reach his potential in this fight.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Robert Curtis:  I've heard of Grover Cleveland. Isn't Cleveland Grover on Sesame Street?
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Nuckle:  The odds makers got it right. Too close to call, no prediction.

donputo69 Hanging out in Puerto Rico:  i aint watching this fight...i hate tarver...and im not a dawson fan...so screw this fight...holla!!!

BigDaddy:  Radam Gibberish is at it again. What?... You REALLY thought that you were the only one that could afford to go to a fight? Most people don't brag about everything they do or have. Honestly, I don't feel like I was bragging about anything ( NOT my style), just giving my perspective on Dawson.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Radam G:  Whatever, Bobby! You know the deal. Holla!
Friday Sep 5, 2008
FLAMECRUX:  well i letting the world know personally that my boy chad dawson bout to hurt tarver something serious and for tarver camp you know how we do!ha

andy from newcastle, deeply depressed at King Kev's departure:  Tarver could predict presents at Christmas time and it still wouldn't happen. Chad had his worst night against the Road Warrior, and came through it. He's going to retire Tarver and his big mouth come Oct. 11th. Dawson remains one of the most exciting of the 'new' champions. Radam G:  CD is going to destroy Tarver. But Tarver will not shut up -- EVER! Holla!
Friday Sep 5, 2008
959 Santa:  Chad Dawson will win because he is younger and faster. Chad Dawson can take a good punch. Tarver will look old in the ring come fight night. Dawson by clear decision.
Friday Sep 5, 2008
Roger Eber:  Mr. Chad Dawson will pulverize Tarver in the most embarassing way. This is a sure thing. Tarvers days are numbered and hes is a has been in boxing

sean porter:  should be a good fight , i hope tarver knocks him out or gets the decision

clg423:  I'm from the same hometown as Bad Chad so I've follewed his career from the start. You don't know how long he's been chasing Tarver.I know he's trained harder for this fight than any other and mark my words,TARVER WILL BE FLAT ON HIS BACK BY THE 10TH ROUND.GO GET IT CHAD.REP 4 NEW HAVEN

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
